A love letter is one of the few gifts that gets more valuable with time. People keep them for decades, reread them on hard days, and find them years later in a drawer and cry. And yet most of us never write one, because we're worried it won't sound right.
Here's the secret: a love letter doesn't need to be poetic. It needs to be true. If you can describe one real moment and one real feeling, you can write a love letter that will be treasured.
How to write a love letter in 6 steps
1. Start by thinking, not writing
Before you write a word, spend ten minutes remembering. When did you first realize you loved them? What do they do that nobody else notices? What's a tiny, ordinary moment you think about more than you'd admit? Jot down anything that comes up. You won't use it all.
2. Open with their name
“My dearest,” “To my favorite person,” or simply their name, or the nickname only you use. It sets the tone instantly.
3. Tell them why you're writing
Give the letter a reason: an anniversary, Valentine's Day, a hard week they've had, or no reason at all. “I've been meaning to tell you this for a while” is a beautiful opening.
4. Share a specific memory
This is the heart of the letter. Don't write “I love spending time with you.” Write “I think about that rainy Sunday when we built a blanket fort and watched three films in a row, and I remember thinking: this is it, this is what happy feels like.” Detail is what makes a letter feel like it could only have been written by you.
5. Say what they mean to you
Be direct. How have they changed your life? What do you admire about them? What do you love that they might not know you've noticed? It's okay if it feels vulnerable. That's the point.
6. Look ahead, then sign off
End with what you're looking forward to together: a trip, a home, growing old, or just next Saturday. Then sign off in a way that feels like you: “Forever yours,” “All my love,” “Always,” or something only the two of you would understand.
Love letter opening lines
- I've started this letter a dozen times, because there's no way to fit everything I feel onto one page.
- Do you remember the first time we…? Because I think about it more than you know.
- I don't say this enough, so I'm writing it down where you can keep it forever.
- There's something I want you to know, and I want you to be able to read it whenever you need to.
- Before you, I didn't know a person could feel like home.
- It's an ordinary day, and I'm writing to tell you that you make ordinary days extraordinary.
Love letter examples
A short love letter for your partner
- My love, I was making coffee this morning and caught myself smiling because I could hear you singing in the shower, badly, as always. It hit me how much I love the ordinary parts of our life: the shared grocery lists, the sleepy Sunday mornings, the way you always steal the warm side of the bed. I don't need grand gestures. I just need more of this, with you, for as long as you'll have me. Forever yours.
A love letter for an anniversary
- Five years ago today, I was so nervous I spilled my drink on you. You laughed, mopped it up with a napkin, and asked if I wanted to try again. I think about that moment often, because it's who you are: patient, funny and always willing to give us another go. Through two moves, one very questionable haircut and a hundred adventures, you've been my best friend. Happy anniversary. Here's to every year still to come.
A long-distance love letter
- It's late here and early there, and I'm thinking about you waking up. I miss the small things most: your hand finding mine without looking, your laugh in the next room. But every call, every message, every countdown reminds me that what we have is worth every mile. Forty-three days. I'm counting. All my love, from here to you.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying a poem or quote as the whole letter. A quote is nice as a single line; the rest should be yours.
- Being too general. “You're amazing” is sweet. “You're the only person who remembers how I take my tea” is unforgettable.
- Making it about an argument. A love letter isn't the place to settle a disagreement.
- Waiting for the perfect moment. “Just because” letters are often the most loved of all.
